- Bhutan became a member of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organizations on 13th April 1982. Bhutan National Commission for UNESCO was established on 1st October 1996 to further strengthen Bhutan’s participation in UNESCO. The Permanent Secretariat (BNCU) is attached to Ministry of Education. The chairman, Secretary General and the Executive Committee comprising of 8 officials are appointed by the government.
- The Bhutan National Commission for UNESCO is the Bhutanese Government focal point for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
- The National Commission serve as official link between the Government of Bhutan and UNESCO in helping to implement UNESCO’s programmes and activities in the region and acts as a point of liaison between government, the community and UNESCO in Bhutan.
- UNESCO was established in 1946 as a specialised agency of the United Nations. UNESCO’s mandate includes education, the natural sciences, the social and human sciences, and culture and communications/information technology.
