Updates: Bhutan secures bronze medals at Badminton Asia Regional Championship 2023
The Bhutanese athletes delivered strong performances at the Badminton South Asia Regional Junior Championship earning bronze medals in both the U15 and U17 age categories.
During the mixed team semi-finals, Bhutan’s team consisting of Pema Tenzin, Yangchen Dolkar, Sonam Phuntsho Tsheten and Yeshey Leksel Dorji faced a 3-0 defeat against Sri Lanka in the U15 category. Similarly, the U17 competitors including Ngawang Rigsel Jurmey, Kritty Gurung and Avik Balampaki lost to Bangladesh with the same score of 3-0. Sri Lanka emerged as the winner in both the U15 and U17 mixed team competitions held from August 18 to 20.
Kritty Gurung and Palden Zhizang Lhamo, the dynamic duo from Bhutan secured a bronze medal in the U17 women’s doubles category showcasing their remarkable skills and determination. Another bronze medal was earned by Ngawang Rigsel Jurmey and Palden Zhizang Lhamo in the U17 mixed doubles category.
A total of eight athletes including four boys and four girls represented Bhutan in the tournament. The five-day championship saw 52 participants from six South Asian countries: Bhutan, Bangladesh, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
According to the Bhutan Badminton Federation, the championships not only provided a platform for these emerging players to showcase their skills but also fostered friendship and sportsmanship among the participating nations. The tournament highlighted the increasing influence of badminton in the South Asian region and underscored the tireless efforts of these young athletes to excel on the global stage.
